Nintendo, you beautiful son of a bitch! Only you could make millions of people all around the world drop everything, only to tune in to a 3-minute video about a video game console. Today at 9 AM CST the video game nerds across the world saw Nintendo storm back into our lives, with the Nintendo Switch!
Don't get me wrong. Nintendo hasn't been absent in the video gaming world over the years. Though, compared to the market that Sony and Microsoft have created over the past couple of years, it felt like Nintendo couldn't hang. That all changed this morning. For months, rumors have been circling all the major circuits what the "NX" could be. Let this day go down in history as the reveal of the Nintendo Switch. Before I go into anything else, check out the video below. Take a moment to let it sink into you. I'll wait…
Okay, you still here? Good. If you follow me on twitter over at @WebHeadNick86, you can see that I have been in some fun conversations with Adam, Kevin and Sean from 2 Player Co-Op, and, Ernie from Pixel and Papers. I think it is fair to say that we were all on board with the machine itself. Of course as with any new piece of hardware that comes out, there are some reservations.
I think first reactions were the name itself. While this may seem silly to the average person, what a gaming console is called can weigh on the hardcore fans. Especially, when the code name sounds a lot cooler. The name "NX" sounds like a badass piece of equipment. One that you couldn't wait to show off to your friends. So, when the name Nintendo Switch was dropped on our heads, there was a little hesitation. That doesn't sound as cool as the "NX"! Now how am I supposed to sound cool in front of my friends? I'll tell you how. You show them the damn console!
I got lost in that video above. I felt like I was in my own little world. Everything around me seemed to slow down. I watched with a huge smile on my face. Watching how each scenario played out gave me goosebumps. The fact that I can go from sitting on my couch, to riding in the car for a long time all while playing a brand new Mario, that's a gamer’s dream come true. Being able to take that unit where ever I desire, is something I could only dream about as a young boy. You're telling me I could be sitting at a bar with a group of friends racing away on Mario Kart! Yeah, count me in all the way.
When the video ended, I audibly expressed myself with one word, “Wow.” Nintendo hit it out of the park with this one. I didn't feel an ounce of disappointment. The point of the video was to show hardcore gamers, and casual gamers that Nintendo is back! And just in time too.
It will be a few years before my son will be able to understand the concept of video games. Though, if he is anything like his father, it won't be too terribly long. I tweeted out a thought that I had watching the NS video this morning. This thought that brought a tear to my eye. One day my and Adam's sons will be old enough to play games. We will be at the beach or on some other type of family vacation, however, unlike their father's, they won't have to pack a separate large bag for their gaming console. No, instead they get this! They get an easy, portable console that they get to play with their dads. That thought alone sold me on this new machine. I can't wait for that day to come.
Nintendo also announce support from a ton of third party developers and middleware partners including Activision, Bethesda, EA, Epic Games, FromSoftware, Square Enix, Ubisoft, and many more!
This month has been crazy for video game fans. Earlier this month PSVR dropped. That is a whole new way to play games in its own right. Today, Nintendo would not go quietly into the night. Today, they finally showed up to the fight, armed to the teeth. This new console brings more than new games to the fray. It's brings a whole new way to experience gaming alone and with friends. Now, it's up to Nintendo to keep the throttle down. They absolutely have to deliver this time around.
