The weather outside may be frightful (at least by Memphis standards, where anything below 60 degrees is considered sweater weather!) but there's lots of fun to be had in the 901, so grab your warmest jacket and climb out from under that electric blanket. There will be plenty of time to hide out indoors when Memphis gets its annual inch of snow. But right now the roads are clear and there are some great happenings taking place over the next few days. Read on to find out more.
First up is Toys and Trivia, which takes place at High Cotton Brewing tonight from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. In the spirit of giving back, High Cotton will be collecting toys and canned goods. There's no minimum requirement (or maximum limit) on what you should bring. High Cotton Brewing doesn't charge an entry fee of any kind for trivia, and tonight is no exception. (So even if you show up without a donation you won't be turned away. But I'd urge everyone to bring something anyway.) Patrons can try out High Cotton's Coffee Stout and there will be plenty to nosh on since food truck Nomadic Feast will be on site.
If you haven't checked out the Midsouth Ice House, downtown's new ice skating rink, then get your butt down their STAT! They've got a host of cool events taking place this holiday season, including a Christmas Cosmic Skate and a performance of "Polar Express," which is billed as a "theater on ice." The Ice House is a one-season only event, so if you miss your chance to go this year, you've missed your chance forever.
Celtic Crossing in Midtown is offering a two-fer this weekend, with Christmas-themed parties on both Friday and Saturday nights. Called Party in the Pub, tonight's event is an Ugly Sweater Party that kicks off at 9 p.m., and features drink specials and music courtesy of DJ Taz. On Saturday, Celtic will host a Sexy Santa Party, which starts at 10 p.m., and encourages patrons to dress in their "most scandalous Christmas attire."
If you're looking for something a little more family friendly, Starry Nights needs to be right at the top of your list. If you aren't familiar with this terrific annual event, then I urge you to check it out STAT. It's a longtime local favorite and a Memphis tradition, which takes places every year at Shelby Farms (you can purchase advance tickets or turn up at the gate). Another fun family event is the Memphis Zoo's annual Zoo Lights, which features actual reindeer, an ice skating rink, and an impressive array of Christmas lights.
This will mark the last weekend for the Memphis Botanic Garden's Snowy Nights, a terrific all-ages event taking place in My Big Backyard, which has been transformed into a magical winter wonderland complete with falling "snow" and festive Christmas lights. There will be games and crafts on hand to entertain the kiddos (both young and old), as well as hot cocoa and other snacks available for purchase.
On December 20, Wiseacre Brewing will be continuing their theme of showing holiday movies with a special screening of Love Actually at 6 p.m. If that's not to your taste, on December 27 they'll have a screening of...wait for it...Gremlins! I think people often forget that Gremlins is actually a Christmas movie, so I love that Wiseacre is including it in their roundup.
Happy Holidays, y'all!
