S2 E2 “Dogs to a Gun Fight’
We start up this episode with Foggy finding Matt unconscious on top of the roof after he did battle with the Punisher. Just a friendly reminder that things did not go well for ole DD. He took an injury to the head, and if it wasn’t for his tough cowl, he may have lost his life. The show does an excellent job of showing his concussed like symptoms. Foggy has gotten him back to his apartment, and things don’t seem normal for Matt. He drops of glass of water, yet does not hear it break. Matter of fact he can’t hear a thing. Just silence. I thought this was a brilliant way to show the side effects of a concussed person with his type of abilities. Believe me this will come back to bite him.
Over on the Foggy and Karen front they are dealing with the DA, Reyes. They have Grotto, and he wants some type of legal protection. However, in order to do that Nelson and Murdock have to strike a deal. Foggy and Reyes (played by Michelle Hurd), go back and forth for a few minutes the later part of which Foggy once again uses his brilliance to gain the upper hand. Just proving that Foggy and his firm will not be pushed around. As I sit there and watch this, I feel myself falling more in love with the character of Foggy. This season has proved to us in a very short time that he is more than comic relief. He is becoming a truly vital part of the show. Foggy’s ability to stand up to Reyes was incredibly satisfying and a more pleasing factor of the show. So far in my opinion Elden Henson’s portrayal of Foggy Nelson is stealing the show.
I want to touch quickly on a few things that I enjoyed from the episode. Castle got his code name this episode. DD visits Melvin Potter, from last season, to go over more ideas for a better suit. Finally, the show does a great spot of Frank walking down a hall after what looks like an assault on some Dogs of Hell members. He has blood splatter on his face as well. It’s another fantastic way the show and writers showcase the brutality of Punisher. It really hits home that he will stop at nothing to eliminate any awful people. So much so that there is a quick scene of Castle going into a shady pawn shop, buying an illegal police scanner from the slime ball that owns the place. But wouldn’t you know it that same sleazy shop owner has some child porn to try and sell. Yeah, he may be trying to “make a quick buck”, but instead he got a quick Yankee-like swing from Frank to the dome with a baseball bat. Sooner or later these dirt bags will learn to shut their mouths with Punisher around.
Now, the climax of the show was a good bit of fun. Grotto is getting wired up by the police and DA. He is given instructions to try and meet with another drug lord. Little did Grotto and Foggy know that it was all of set up by the DA to try and capture Frank Castle. Naturally things do not go as planned. Frank got the jump on them. Punisher creates a diversion with a truck and dead Dog of Hell member. Cops are confused and go into a shooting frenzy with Frank. Once again just as Castle has the shot he wants to take on Grotto, DD shows up again. Another fight ensues. And what a fight it is. Two skilled fighters going hand to hand in MORTAL….well you know. Not to mention the freaking cops were shooting at them the whole time. Now let’s take a time out for a second. Why are cops in shows like this so awful at shooting just two people!? I mean don’t they have months and months of training for shit like this? Anyways, just a thought. Remember how I said those symptoms of a concussion was going to come back to bite DD? Well sure enough it did, though it wasn’t much of a bite. More like a punch to the face. As Punisher got the upper hand again, and was able to take DD off somewhere unconscious yet again. If the show continues to work like how this episode did, then the action should be just right for the rest of the season.
This episode had so many high moments from Foggy being able to grow more in this season to Matt’s brain damage to the final fight. It had plenty of things going well for it. Episode 2 focused a lot on The Punisher by continuing to root out who he is, and why he is here. He continues to get the upper hand on Matt one way or the other. As the viewer you’re sitting there watching and waiting to see when the Devil will get his due (seriously these puns are just a little too easy). Overall, it was a great episode, and I love where this is going.
