Hey everyone! This week I decided to post about something a little different than comics. For one, I have gotten this question a lot from some friends, and I thought the best way to address it is on the site. Two, Adam and I are on vacation starting this week. So I figured why not do a little something different, that I know Adam and I both care about. Hopefully, in posting this it not only helps answer the question, but helps make people aware of why this is a good thing. Of course if any of you would like to discuss it anymore tweet me @WebHeadNick86 or tweet the @Nerd_901 account. Either way I hope everyone enjoys this. All the best everyone!
The question I was referring to earlier is "Why is Spider-Man only for the PS4?" The question is usually followed by "that sucks" or "it's not fair, because I don't own a PS4." While those are all perfectly fine reactions, I think I can provide some answers.
So let's start with the news of the game first. Back in June Adam and I did a piece of what we wanted to see at E3. This was one of my choices. It had been rumored for months that this may be the plan, and I was excited to see if what we were hearing was in fact true. And while it won't be SuckerPunch studios that is developing the game, Insomniac is perfect as well. I am sure, like myself, other PS4 owners were ecstatic to see this news.
Still many Xbox One owners were left confused and angry. I know a very close friend of mine was not happy about it. As he was a fan of the first few Spider-Man games attached to the movies, he was the first person I thought of when the news hit. I knew he would be upset about it. Only after talking to him for a few minutes, that I think I eased his mind a bit.
Let's start with why this is a good thing. It makes me think that Marvel has turned the corner in the video game market. Hopefully this means Marvel is going to start caring more about making good video games. Even a few short years ago they were cranking out what one could consider "bad" games, telling the development teams and publishers to make something within 6-9 months, then tossing it on retail stores' shelves. That is not a recipe for good video games, folks, and those games showed it.
Secondly, if Marvel gives the studio time to make a stellar game, that could create wonders. It would be the start of a new tent pole game series for the PS4 community. That could be the other idea Marvel has in mind. Let the developers create an amazing game leading to tons of success, the type of success other exclusive PlayStation games, like Uncharted and inFamous, have seen in the past. Once the game does well, then possibly more Marvel games could be in our future. I think that this could be another reason to the decision to have an exclusive Spider-Man game.
Lastly, Sony finally partnered with Marvel to make a new Spider-Man movie. That could be the only reason why they are making a new Spider-Man game. While most would think that this is the most logical reason, I am hoping it's not the only one. If this is the only reason behind the exclusive game, then it seems that they aren't concerned about developing a new story. It would show that they are perfectly fine with riding the coat tails of yet another Spider-Man movie. Though if the suit from the trailer is any indication, it seems like it won't have anything to do with Spider-Man: Homecoming. The suit has a big white spider on the chest. As we saw in Captain America: Civil War, this is not the suit that Spider-Man dons. Which makes me think that he will be wearing the same suit from Civil War in the new movie. Either way I hoping that they don't make the game following the movie story lines. Make this an important step to the future of Marvel video games, and make a new story!
That being said, where are the Xbox One owners left? While some people, like myself, are lucky to own both consoles, not everyone has that luxury. Well don't worry Xbox(ers), I think there is a bright future for Marvel games exclusively to your console as well. That's exactly what this Spider-Man game meant. Sony happened to beat Xbox to the punch this time around. Though, believe me, if Sony is going to get a game only for it's console, then the powers that be at Microsoft will not be left out in the cold. That means neither will hardcore Xbox fans. We recently saw some news about an abandoned Daredevil game, and late last year we saw news about a first person Avengers game that got scrapped too. Does this mean that Marvel is paying attention to video games, that these games can possible see new life? Who knows as of right now. But I can honestly say, I think Xbox fans are going to get an awesome game either way. I for one, would love to see an Avengers first person type of game. Think about how cool it would be for players to be able to control Iron Man's Repulsor tech, or be worthy enough to wield Thor's beloved hammer, Molinjor. Seriously, thinking about it now gives me goose bumps. No matter what Xbox and Marvel have planned for gamers, I think we can all agree, we will love it.
I hope that I have given some insight on why this is an important matter for video game fans. I feel like the future of Marvel video games is the reason behind the exclusive Spider-Man PS4 game. At least I hope that is their reasoning. At the end of the day, it could be something as simple as a deal with Sony because of the new Spider-Man movie. I truly hope that is not the case. Though both Insomniac and Sony execs have already said that this will not be a movie tie-in game. This game is going to be it's own entity in the Spider-Man lore. Let's hope that is the case. The last thing we need is another Spider-Man movie based game. The last two for Amazing Spider-Man were not all that great.
It will show how much Marvel is invested in games again if this game is it's own Spider-Man story. Hopefully, we will hear a little bit more about the game in the next few months at PSX. As far as a release date, I could see this game being released late 2017, though wouldn’t be shocked if this game doesn't hit stores until 2018. Either way keep it locked here, and we will keep you posted about any news.
