Hey there everyone! This past weekend the all-important San Diego Comic Con went down. Unfortunately for your Nerd 901 crew, there weren't any takers on my tweet a week prior to the event. I know it's disappointing. Why wouldn't some large comic publishing company *cough Marvel cough* want to send a kick ass startup company like ours!? It baffles me as well folks. Nonetheless the convention pushed on. This week instead of reviewing comics the purpose of this article is to go over some of the things that happened this at SDCC.
As most of you know SDCC isn't much about comics anymore. Basically Marvel and DC are out there having "who's penis is bigger" type of panels. Showing off all big time movies, new castings, and hit TV shows. I won't lie. Of course I am sucked into that! If Marvel rolls out the cast of Black Panther, you're damn right I want to know everything about it. Like I said, the purpose is to hit on some exciting events that happened at those panels. If you feel like I missed anything give me a shout via Twitter at either @Nerd_901 or @WebHeadNIck86. With all the news that came out over the weekend I may miss something here. I hope that if you missed something over the weekend, that I was able to cover it here. All the best everyone!
Let's start with Marvel. Last year they opted out on participating at SDCC, granted like all comic cons they still had the floor showings. This includes new comics, toys, and comic writers. But, their absence in Hall H was clearly noticeable. The reason for not being at SDCC rest solely on Marvel wanting their big news to drop at their own convention, D23. This year for whatever reason they felt like their presence was needed at SDCC. Thank god for that! What an impact they had!
Brie Larson confirmed as Captain Marvel:
That's right! I love it! This had to be one of the biggest announcements at Comic-Com. I bet that was an easy way to announce her as well. Brie Larson was already at SDCC to promote her role for Kong: Skull Island. Why not holler at her, to let her help confirm that she will be starring as Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel. I, for one, am in love with this casting. She will make a fantastic Captain Marvel.
Cast of Black Panther:
All the cast members of the Black Panther movie were presented on stage. I know that may not seem like a big deal to most, but to Hall H it was a greeted with a standing ovation. That's exactly what that cast and director deserved. Hell, look at that line up! All that on screen talent, it gives me goose bumps thinking about it. Director, Ryan Coogler, has assembled as incredible cast for this movie. It wasn't a surprise to finally see that Michael B. Jordan was confirmed for not only the movie, but as the villain. It will be tons of fun to see Jordan play a villain. I can't wait to see him bring Erik Killmonger to life. This movie has all the potential to be one of the best Marvel movies to date.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2
The first installment was a huge success. Thanks to superb acting of Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, the lovable duo of Rocket Raccoon and Groot, kick ass Gamora, and of course the damaged, yet goofy Drax. I loved that movie so much, I list it as my favorite Marvel movie….ever! I'm sure I'm not the only one to think that, but I bet there will be people to call me crazy. So, naturally when the sequel was announced (two weeks before the first even released in theaters) I began tracking it. When Kurt Russell was confirmed to be in the movie, I thought he would end up being Star-Lord's father. Turns out he is playing Ego the Living Planet. Even I'm not sure what that means. But it sounds awesome. Sylvester Stallone has also been confirmed for the movie, though his role has not been revealed. I am beyond stoked for the sequel. I will try my best to be the first in line for the movie.
If you know me, then you know how crazy of a Spider-Man fan I am, maybe borderline obsessed. That may be a conversation for another day. That being said, other than the concept art, people who weren't in attendance weren't shown the footage. Again, I blame the comic book company that didn't want to pick up the Nerd 901 tab. Anyways, the concept art shown was that of Vulture, played by Michael Keaton The supporting actors where confirmed on the panel including Donald Clover, Robert Downey Jr, Martin Starr, Bokeem Woodine, and Tony Revolori, who is playing Flash Thompson. We were given just a taste of Tom Holland as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War, and I thought he crushed it. It will be amazing to see him in his own solo movie.
A new trailer dropped for Dr. Strange. This is going to one hell of a trippy movie. Talk about a mind bender. Check it out below.
Marvel Netflix and TV shows:
We sent out a tweet that featured the news of Marvel's Netflix series. It not only showed Luke Cage, but Iron Fist and the quick teaser for The Defenders. I'm not sure anyone at the panel was expecting more than Luke Cage, but if you were one of the lucky ones to be there, then you got quite the surprise. It was some exciting stuff to see Finn Jones to bring Danny Rand to life. Even if it was for a short moment, it was still great to see. We also saw that Daredevil season 3 is in the works. What is unclear is if that season will be released before or after the first season of The Defenders.
Speaking of surprises, it's official, Ghost Rider will be coming to the Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.. Before you roll your eyes, it’s not Nicolas Cage. Matter of fact, it’s not even THAT Ghost Rider. No, we will not see another Johnny Blaze adaptation. It will be the more recent version of the Spirit of Vengeance. His name is Robbie Reyes. This Ghost Rider doesn’t use a motorcycle to race around the world. His preferred vehicle is a sweet muscle car. Show runners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen have said this season will make a connection with Doctor Strange. After last season, I was getting kind of worn out on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Though now with the addition of Ghost Rider, I may have to stick around a little bit longer.
DC's Justice League:
Wow! Unlike my first reaction to the Batman V. Superman trailer, this “wow” was out of pure excitement. I think a lot had to do with The Flash. Ezra Miller is going to kill it. Fellow Nerd 901(er) Chris told me not to worry. That he had plenty of faith in Miller’s capability to pull off The Fastest Man Alive. Boy, he was right! Sure, it was only a quick trailer. However, DC made the right choice to highlight Miller. Don’t get me wrong, I adore the TV version of The Flash. Grant Gustin does a stellar job of bringing Barry Allen to life. I was even a bit upset to know that DC was going to do their usual and cast a different person to play Flash. Now, it feels like I am going to be eating my words. Believe me, I am perfectly happy to eat those words. I want this Justice League movie and franchise to be awesome. Now with this cast and everything finally being fleshed out, I think the DCU is on its way. My favorite part of that whole trailer is the interaction between Bruce Wayne and Barry Allen. I couldn’t stop laughing. I thought it was gold! It was good to see more of Aquaman and Cyborg too. I look forward to seeing all the members of the Justice League in the feature film.
I mentioned how I thought the DCU could be on the rise with the Justice League. My thought process is backed up by the Wonder Woman trailer dropping this past weekend. Gal Gadot was one of the shining points from Batman V. Superman. My guess is, Zack Snyder chose not to over use her, that way she can shine in both her solo movie and the Justice League movie. I'm fond of the idea of Chris Pine playing the potential love interest, Steve Trevor. I am beyond excited for a full film featuring Princess Diana aka Wonder Woman!
The big news of this game came from E3 earlier this year. In this is alternative universe Superman takes over the world. He rules it with an iron fist and if anyone rebels, he won't hesitate to end someone's life. Ed Boon tweeted out a few days before SDCC that two more characters would be revealed. Those two characters were Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle. Naturally, Wonder Woman was a smart move to release now. Though, Blue Beetle was not expected. I am not too familiar with Blue Beetle, but from the reaction I saw on the internet, most people are pretty excited. I was a huge fan of the first game. As a matter of fact, I still go back to it every once in a while. The story was tons of fun, and the fighting mechanics started to shape the next Mortal Kombat game. I can't wait to get my hands on this second installment of the game. It seems like it's going to have a larger roster this time around too. Every super hero and villain on that roster will be equipped with bad ass moves to help kick ass all around the DC Universe.
This year’s San Diego Comic Con was a great success. Marvel was able to roll out some exciting news, while parading tons of talent on stage. Captain Marvel and Black Panther were the highlights of their panels. DC introduced us to the remaining Justice League members, and made us fall in love with Ezra Miller’s Flash. They also showed us more of Wonder Woman’s world with her solo movie trailer. I am sure over the next few months we will find out more about both Marvel and DC’s plans for those future movies. Until next time nerds. All the best!
