What's up y'all!? I have said in the past and will continue to say this site is meant to "nerd" out about anything people want to "nerd" out about. This remains true even if it's about sports. If you know me I'm a big sports nut. My favorite sport is football. My favorite thing about football is this time of the year. When the NFL holds their yearly draft. Taking the best players from their respective college programs in a 7 round draft. This time of the year experts are putting out their multiple updates versions of mock drafts. I thought it would be kind of cool if I did the same. But mine is going to have a little twist to it. Instead of saying what I think MAY happen, I'm going to touch on what I would LIKE to happen. Almost like a fantasy mock draft for the first round. Join me as I jump into the NFL Draft Round 1.
Since I don't get paid to make up mock draft, please try not to kill me over these picks. Again, these are not picks I think will happen. Mostly picks I would like to see happen. Sure, there will be some "smart" picks sprinkled in here. But at the end of this it's all make believe. If you want to talk to me about what I think will actually happen, hit me up on twitter. You can find me @WebHeadNick86. I'd love to talk NFL Draft with anyone who wants to talk about it. Otherwise, here is my 2017 Fantasy NFL Draft for Round 1.
1. Cleveland Browns-Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A&M
See like I said "smart" pick. I think anyone who knows a thing or two believes this is the right pick, and so do I.
2. San Francisco 49ers-Malik Hooker, S, Ohio State
I think the 49ers want to go safety here. New GM John Lynch wants to get the ball back to his offense. Jamal Adam, in my opinion is the better safety, but Hooker is a tad bit better at creating turnovers.
3. Chicago Bears-Jonathan Allen, DL, Alabama
The Bears have a lot of needs in their defense. Maybe more at offensive line, but I don’t see a OL worth taking here. Allen will bring much needed help on the defensive line.
4. Jacksonville Jaguars-Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU
This is kind of a hard one for me to swallow, but it's another one of those smart picks I can't get away from making sense. I hate it cause our friend, Grant Box, is a huge Titans fan. I would hate for his team to have to go up against Fournette twice a season. Also, let the record show if Fournette doesn’t' do as well as Ezekeil Elliot his rookie year isn't because Elliot is better. It's a matter of the teams they play on.
5. Tennessee Titans-Jamal Adams, S, LSU
I may have upset Grant in the previous pick, but I hope this makes up for it. This move makes the most sense to me. The Titans are in desperate need of over the top help. While Adams may not create tons of turnovers, he will make sure his side of the field is off limits. Adams is being considered one of the best safeties since Sean Taylor. I believe this to be true.
6. New York Jets-Mike Williams, WR, Clemson
This was kind of a hard pick for me to go choose. They may have another need in their defensive secondary. But once I looked at their wide receiver none of the names popped out to me. Meaning they need some serious help there. Some may think QB in this spot too, and I could see that happening as well.
7. Los Angles Chargers-Solomon Thomas, DL, Stanford
Here is another team that could use a few good picks. Last year the Chargers took Joey Bosa. A fantastic pick if you ask me. Why not build on that defensive line with Thomas. But don't be surprised if they go with a cornerback either.
8. Carolina Panthers-Marshon Lattimore, CB, Ohio State
Originally I wanted to put Leonard Fournette with this pick. And I truly believe if he is here in the draft the Panthers won't hesitate to take him. Though with my mock that isn't possible. So, next best pick helping the Panthers defensive secondary. Christian McCafffery good be a good fit too.
9. Cincinnati Bengals-Ruben Foster, LB, Alabama
Everything I'm reading and seeing from the Bengals camp is how much they are in love with Foster. I think this is a great fit for him and this team. Foster will be able to help an aging LB core. Side him with Vontaze Burfict and you're starting a LB corps that could terrorize offensives.
10. Buffalo Bills-Haason Reddick, LB, Temple
Last year the Bills went with Shaq Lawson from Clemson. I say keep turning up the pressure. Grab Reddick and add a quick, athletic outside linebacker that can get to the QB in a hurry.
11. New Orleans Saints-Tre'Davious White, CB, LSU
Originally I had Gareon Conley at this spot. But with recent reports of him being accused of rape, I had to take him off the board. I think it's one thingto take a guy busted for smoking dope, but it's a whole different monster to take someone accused of rape. Maybe people still take him, because he hasn't been arrested for it yet, but I wouldn't touch him in the first round.
12. Cleveland Browns-Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson
In a crazy, crazy world I would almost put another defender here. Or a big time player maker. But at the end of it all a QB makes too much sense. I'm taking Watson over other QBs because I think he has the tools to start on Sundays, and probably has the most experience of the other QBs in the draft. Plus, any man that can beat Alabama is good by me.
13. Arizona Cardinals-Jabrill Peppers, S, Michigan
So, this is kind of a crazy pick here. People think of the Cardinals as a secondary heavy team, but go look at their depth chart. I'll wait. Yeah, not as deep as you thought huh? I think with the addition with Peppers then that secondary could be pretty scary. Obviously, don’t be surprised if they take a QB or WR here either.
14. Philadelphia Eagles-Christian McCaffrey, RB, Stanford
I struggled with this pick a little longer than I thought I would. I think the Eagles could use some help at the corner position and on the defensive line. But, the overall factor pushing me to McCaffrey is their second year QB Carson Wentz. He can be a great QB, but he has zero help in the running game. Add this stud RB and it will take some of the load off Wentz.
15. Indianapolis Colts-Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama
This was another pick I struggled with a selection. For one I could see them going OL. Protect Luck at all cost, but their defense is absolutely garbage. I mean flaming, hot garbage. They need desperate help in the secondary. They could use some help pretty much at all positions on the defensive side of the ball. But secondary help seems the most desired spot.
16. Baltimore Ravens-Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee
We all know the Ravens are known for their defense. Though, over the past couple of seasons it feels like their defense hasn't been all that terrifying. The Ravens have been known more for their offense here lately. That's why I think we see the former UT defensive star taking here. But I wouldn't be surprised if another WR or tight end O.J. Howard is selected here.
17. Washington Redskins-Zach Cunningham, LB, Vanderbilt
Some may think this is a little high for Cunningham, but I think this is a great fit. The Redskins could use some help in the linebacker depth. Why not take the guy who lead the SEC in tackles last year. Yeah, that's right not a guy from Alabama, LSU, Florida, or Georgia; but a guy from Vandy lead the SEC in tackles!
18. Tennessee Titans-Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan
The Titans are back on the clock and I would love for them to take Davis. A big, physical WR would be a great pick here for them. I know with John Ross still on the board and it may be hard to pick size over speed. But it's a clear pick to me.
19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers-O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama
If Howard makes it this far I could totally see the Bucs picking up this super athlete. They signed DeSean Jackson in the offseason, and here would be another big time weapon for Jameis Winston. They need offensive line help too, so that could be considered an option.
20. Denver Broncos-Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin
The Broncos are absolutely decimated at the offensive line position. They need tons of help here, and they weren't able to address it during free agency. They should take this big guy from Wisconsin to help protect whomever is their starting QB next season.
21. Detroit Lions-Jared David, LB, Florida
The Lions need some help with the linebacker spots. This athletic linebacker can do it all. He can pressure the QB, or help in coverage from the LB position. This guy is a stud and could fly all over the field for the Lions defense.
22. Miami Dolphins-Obi Melifonwu, S, UConn
On paper it's hard to see where Miami needs the most help. They are pretty solid in their front seven on defense. I think they could use some offensive line help. But ultimately, I'm going with the safety position. There isn't a clear standout at that spot. Adding Obi's speed and athleticism is a great fit.
23. New York Giants-David Kjoku, TE, Miami
An offensive lineman may be a good pick here, but I'm giving Eli another weapon to throw to on Sundays. We all know OBJ is going to terrorize the field, and with the emerging of Sterling Shepherd it would be a good fit for the Miami product to help stretch the defense.
24. Oakland Raiders-Kevin King, CB, Washington
The Raiders to continue to build their young, yet terrific defense here. Last year they took safety Karl Joseph from West Virginia. This year they add to that secondary with the great corner from Washington. Raiders are going to make a big push in the NFL this year.
25. Houston Texans-Mitchell Trubisky, QB, North Carolina
I'm sure it will shock some people to see the QB to fall this far. I differ from other draft experts on Mitchell. I think he is a good QB, but his lack of experience kind of worries me. I'm hoping to be wrong, and this kid is fantastic at the next level. But for now I'm going with my gut. But either way my gut tells me Texans have to come out of this first round with a QB.
26. Seattle Seahawks-Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida
I know some people think offensive line is in play here. I'm going another way. Their defensive secondary has always been the stand out position for this team. I'm going there with this pick. That secondary is getting older, so time to had some youth. I think Wilson is a great fit with this team.
27. Kansas City Chiefs-Charles Harris, DE, Missouri
I know this pick may be a head scratcher at first, but think about it. This team prides itself on getting to the QB.I think this is a possible pick they could take. I would actually like to see them take Harris here. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if the team reaches here, and takes one of the other QBs, like Patrick Mahomes.
28. Dallas Cowboys-Adoree' Jackson, CB, USC
We all know Jerry Jones loves his athletic type players. And with basically their entire secondary departing it makes sense to take a cornerback at this pick. I like Jackson with this pick. He is probably the most athletic secondary player in this draft.
29. Green Bay Packers-Teez Tabor, CB, Florida
I really believe the Packers are going to continue to build their secondary even more this year in the draft. I think Tabor fits the mold for this secondary. Don't be surprised it they go with a pass rusher here too. Maybe a Taco Charlton out of Michigan.
30. Pittsburgh Steelers-Budda Baker, S, Washington
What a surprise here the Steelers are taking another safety. They seem to always find a great safety to fit their system. I think Baker is a solid pick here. Though, if Jabrill Peppers is still on the board he would be a great pick too. Of course he isn't available here with me, so Baker it is.
31. Atlanta Falcons-Forrest Lamp, OG, Western Kentucky
Look, this guy is a stud. He is a fantastic guard, and super athletic too. I know if Lamp is still on the board the Flacons will run this pick in. If not I would expect them to try and trade out of the first round. But I think this is a great landing spot for Lamp.
32. New Orleans Saints-John Ross, WR, Washington
This Saints are back at it again. They probably have a need for another CB at this pick. Honestly, it wouldn't hurt. But, if Ross is sitting here at 32 I don't see how the Saints pass up on him. They traded away a speedster in the off season to the Pats. They need to get some speed back on the field. If Ross is gone or they pass up on him I would expect another CB here.
There you have it folks. The picks I would like to see happen in the first round of the draft. Again, I should stress these picks are what I would like to see the teams do. I'm already preparing to be wrong about a lot of these. There are so many "official" mock drafts out there, I wanted to do something a little different. Either way I'm overly excited for the draft. If you want to talk about it, then hit me up on Twitter. I hope everyone enjoys the draft. All the best!
