Nintendo just announced to the world that they have sold 2.74 million Nintendo Switch consoles, and they believe it will pass the life time sales of the Wii U in a little over a year, which sits around 13 million. But instead of pushing the Switch, Nintendo has announced the Nintendo New 2DS XL.
If you recall the 2DS was a 3DS that did not bend and it did not have the 3D functionality. The New 2DS XL bends, but drops the 3D function for a cheaper price. This new handheld comes with a C-stick, Amiibo support, Z-buttons, and all games that are compatible with the New 3DS will work on the New 2DS XL.
The 3DS has a fairly large install base, but I am in the camp that Nintendo should push the Switch as their only system. This would combine their console and handheld gaming libraries into one juggernaut of a system. However, they are still pushing the DS line. The New 2DS XL will be out July 28th for $149.99 in the U.S.
This is a weird move, but I'm not the head of Nintendo so I'm sure they know what they are doing. I'm sure they will milk the DS market for all that it is worth.
